DIY // Two garments in one: pattern hacking a vest to be reversible
The first 500 people to click the link will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare: skl.sh/theessentialsclub07241
Making this vest was... a journey! Hope you enjoy the ride.
I chose to hack the Swim Style Viola Vest pattern to attempt to make a two in one garment - a reversible vest. So obsessed with how it turned out and was well worth pushing through all my breakdowns.

Omg I was looking for tutorials for a tiered dress for beginners but they were all too advanced for me 🫣. This pops up randomly a day later 🥲. You explain steps so well. Was wondering if you knew the name of a neckline? The neckline is straight across like this and has a tiny vertical slit in the middle. If you were to snip 2 inches vertically down this dress in the middle, it would look like that. I was searching for dresses in that style for evening wear.

This is my 3rd time using one of your video tutorials and patterns for a DIY project, and really enjoyed all of them ! Just quick question, for the long band length, when you say 1.25;1.5;2 x (4xpannel width) , is the pannel width the size without seam allowance or with ? I’m running short on fabric and I want to see if it’s worth dividing the long band into three pieces or not 😅

My auntie used to work on the queens clothes she taught me when bathing sew two lines of biggest stitch and pull together so more even gather then stitch in-between the two lines to the other part of garment then pull out completely the line of stitching showing on the garment . It's so neat and even, and you don't have any folded over gathers.

hi, i'm making the 4th top (gathered one in cream fabric) and for some reason it's barely any narrower at the top than the bottom (i.e., not as flared bottom or gathered top as the example) 🫠 does anyone know why this might be? it's still wearable just not as cute bc it makes me look like i'm wearing a pillowcase LOL

I just made the first one out of some scrap fabric! I didn't have quite enough to fit my bust so made little ties for the side seams. It took me about 2 hours with the ties included (would have been faster if I had enough fabric). Thank you for such an easy to follow tutorial!

I agree! I'm in a whole different gen of sewers, too. Would pay a lot of money for a machine that has an alarm or better yet, it stops sewing when the bobbin thead runs out. I mean, it's been 50 years of this annoying thing happening for me! (When my mind wanders mainly)

Since you asked, I'm working on making a cami like the Ogden cami, just using a tank I already have to self-draft instead of using their pattern. I'm also working on toiles before sewing some flowy bubble gauze shorts that will be a little bigger in the waistband to fit my baby bump. I also feel like this vest would be super cute for maternity and nursing so thanks for sharing!

For those who haven’t sewn a bias cut before, I would 100% recommend, depending on the fabric used, to let the dress hang with its own weight in case there is any stretching that happens to the hem as it’s on the bias (I would recommend at least a a day, but it can be several) That way you can trim the bottom even if it happens beforehand, so you don’t have to re-hem it later 😅This can definitely happen if you use the slinkier fabric at a longer length ❤ love this tutorial soooooo useful

Hey Maddy, i’m a fashion teacher and i like to give you a tip for next time you want to make this vest reversible. So before you stitch down de neck and armholes you can finish the hem. Just lay the 2 layers with good sides facing in and stitch the hem + the straps in the sideseams. Then flip the vest inside out en stich down the neck and armholes. Then you can finish de arms en neck like the pattern tell’s you. I hope this tip will help you in the future 😇 love your video’s 🥰

Stretching flat as I sew , tightened and loosen bobbin casing, light weight fabric and still it is not working fabric shir is loose and or top thread popping ? Do you have any suggestions or does some machines just not shir?
